Blog Post #4

The standard I chose is SC.K.HS.2.2 and it highlights how to address balancing time between electronics and physical activity. The purpose of this standard is to promote a healthy lifestyle in our youth. This standard is geared toward kindergarten students in particular. That being said, I do feel prepared to implement this standard to an extent. I think I can explain why a healthy balance between screentime and exercise is important, but I might need some advice on how to explain that to kindergarten students. I want to ensure that I can effectively explain this to my students so that it sets up a healthy lifestyle that they can pursue for the rest of their lives. 

The Educator Toolkit that I selected was kindergarten mathematics. I think these resources will be extremely helpful as a teacher because if I am needing some inspiration for lesson plans or resources to aid my lesson plan, they are listed here. Because the resources here are reviewed and approved, it will help me ensure that I am using something that will teach my students the correct content. Another resource provided by CPALMS are formative assessments. This resource details many different ways a teacher can assess their students' knowledge in certain areas. For kindergarten mathematics, this website provides 105 different formative assessments on different standards in the subject area. 

The Newsletter Design assignment is probably one of my favorite assignments that I have ever done in my education. I learned how to use different features on the desktop version of MS Word that I had never used prior, such as columns, hyperlinks, and moving images around the document so that they do not have to align with text. In the future, I think I could improve some of my spacing and the colors I used. Although I think that my colors fit the theme well and are pleasing to the eye, I would like to experiment with using different shades and colors instead of sticking to the same shade of orange like I did in this newsletter. I will definitely utilize the skills I acquired by making my own newsletters and posters in the future for my classes. I think newsletters are a great way to get information to and communicate with the parents and ensure that they know how to contact me if needed.

I was in 8th grade when Covid hit, so I spent the rest of the year online like everyone else. I had to use Zoom and Canvas to attend class and get work done. I think Zoom is effective because it allows the speaker to screenshare and teach in a kind of face-to-face manner. However, it is very easy for students to get distracted or not pay attention to the speaker because they can turn off their camera and do what they want. Canvas is also a great way to assign work and keep track of grades but it was very challenging for me to learn strictly through instructions on Canvas because sometimes they are unclear or not very detailed.  An open educational resource is one that anyone can use and typically can be shared or edited. I truly never thought that blogging would be something that I enjoy because I hate writing and I consider it one of my weaknesses. However, I have enjoyed blogging for this class. I think it is a great way to reflect on the week and what I learned. It also allows me to go back and see my growth from the beginning of the semester to where I am now. Because of this, I think that blogging will be something that I do once I am a teacher so that I can sit down at the end of each week and reflect. This will help immensely with the mental health aspect of teaching but I also may be able to reach other teachers as well who might need to get some advice or see that someone is dealing with similar obstacles that they are.  I tried to use Generative AI to create a meme that showed a student procrastinating and waking up from a long nap to realize their assignment is due in an hour. Prior to this assignment, I had never used Powerpoint to make a game like Jeopardy. It was very tedious and took me about three hours to complete which was frustrating at times, but I still did enjoy it. In the future, I could make things easier by creating a slide that has the buttons on it and then duplicating it, so I do not have to go into each individual slide and add the navigation buttons. I think it will be a great resource to use in my classroom in the future to pair learning with fun. I learned how to use the navigation buttons and how to disable linear navigation. I had always wondered how my teachers made Jeopardy games for quiz review, and now I know how! I think data collection tools can be utilized in many different ways in the classroom. I plan to be a kindergarten teacher, thus I can imagine myself using surveys at the beginning of the year to get to know my students and parents.
