I have been using MS Word since middle school for assignments such as writing essays. However, in my junior year of high school I started using Google Docs for everything because I started to do more assignments that required me to use a word processing software and I found Docs to be easier for me. It also helps that I have a Chromebook, so Docs is the main software that I would use on my laptop. I think that Docs is more simple than Word and I like the layout of it more. Because of this, I am a little rusty with MS Word as I have not really used it in over a year.
I think the standard that is the most meaningful to me is "leader". In my own experience, the role of educators is to lead their students in learning and to be a role model for them. I know that a lot of my teachers are people that I looked up to and who I wanted to be like when I grew up. Educators can also be leaders for their colleagues, leading them to explore new ways of teaching or technology. I learned from this article about the standards for educators that being a leader also involves advocating for yourself, your students, and your colleagues to ensure that everyone is supplied with the best technology and materials that are required to facilitate student success.
I partially agree with the label "digital native". I do think that people in my generation are more familiar with technology because it has been around our entire lives and we do not know a world without it. However, I also believe that there are people in my generation who are not as familiar with technology for many reasons. Their family may not have been able to afford it or they could choose to not surround themselves with technology and to not use it. That being said, I think the term digital native is too broad and cannot be generalized to multiple generations. Typically, the digital immigrants who have been my teachers are better at using laptops and computers whereas digital natives are better at using smartphones. I think this is because digital immigrants are more familiar with computers because for some of them, they were around during their youth. In my learning experience, I have had to help my teachers use technology, sometimes they need help connecting the laptop to the television or projector. I do not think this impacted me negatively or positively in any way but it does demonstrate the difference between the familiarity with technology across generations. I think my future students might have to help me with technology because as technology evolves, they will be able to learn it very quickly whereas it might take me a little bit longer because I am used to different technology.
Hello Eden, this is a well written entry. It would be interesting to see the dynamic change and see ourselves labeled as "Boomers"
